Coke won't send you to hell

So today I was on my lunch break at work enjoying my Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich, when Trace asked me if I was having it with a Coke. Ever since I was a kid Trace would torment me by asking if I wanted a Coke or if I was drinking a Coke.
I guess at some point in time people got the idea that LDS (Latter-Day Saints aka Mormons) can't drink Coke or Pepsi or other caffeinated beverages. I would like to dispel this myth. No where in Mormon doctrine does is state that Coke, Pepsi, or any other caffeinated soft drink is prohibited. Now with that clear, there are a lot of LDS who refrain from drinking caffeinated soft drinks, This is a personal/cultural decision, not one based on doctrine. Next time you try to send your favorite Mormon to hell by offering him or her a Coke, try again.

Hello, I'm Trace.
I married Steven's mom's sister 20 years ago so that would make me his uncle.
I'm Black--sort of. While my father was in the Navy, he saw my mother for the first time in a hotel in Tokyo, Japan. He immediately went to a nearby florist, bought flowers, and presented them to my mom. She thought he was crazy. Neither spoke the other's language but they got married and moved back to the states. Magic.

I was born five years later. Eventually, my mom was dragging four kids around while my dad was being stationed all over the Pacific. We lived in Sunnyvale, Ca., South Central L.A., Atsugi, Japan, Agana, Guam, Barber's Point, Hi., to finally settle in Granada Hills, Ca. at the age of eleven.

I grew up thinking I was a Liberal. Through jr. high and high school my friends came from "diverse" backgrounds. Back then we would hang out looking like the teenage U.N. I thought my friends were also liberal because they hung out with ME (I was quite self-centered) until Ron (a white guy) started talking about how cool REAGAN was. WHAT!?! He also mentioned how much he despised Jesse Jackson. I decided to kick his ass. Several guys kept me back. Rich (another white guy) agreed with Ron. Rich joined the Army after high school to fly Huey Cobras over the DMZ in Korea. So did "Skip" (half Korean/half Japanese) and Ted (American Indian). The rest of the guys were pretty much apolitical (one Mexican, one Jew, one Irish-Catholic, and two half Italian/half Japanese brothers). For some reason, I had to stand up for my "race".

I heard it all: "Quit being so sensitive". "It's just an opinion...relax". "We don't think of you as Black". That did it--now Ron has to die. Finally someone says, "Do you know why we're friends? It's because we don't care about what color you are, where you're from, what kind of car you drive, or whatever! It's because we like you for you...period".

I left pissed off convinced they were wrong. Months later, most of us graduated from high school. I was going to be an artist living in some Greenich Village or Soho loft someday but I needed a job during college. A friend of mine called me and said he could get me an interview at Gemco. It was like Target, but cooler. I got the job. I met a girl who ran the toy department. I married her a few years later. The friend who got me the interview was Ron.

In 1984 I voted for Walter Mondale (D) for President.
In 1986 I voted for Tom Bradley (D) for Governor of California.
In 1988 I voted for Michael Dukakis (D) for President. One month before I was shocked when my wife (then girlfiend) said she was voting for George HW Bush. When I asked her why she said, "Because I like him".

In 1989 I met my mentor. He looked as he could have played a supporting role on The Sopranos. He was the coolest guy i'd ever met. He took me under his wing and treated me like a son. He told me he read two pages of the bible every night before he went to bed. He also read books on business, history, politics, religion, self-help, and biographies. He suggested I do the same.

So I did. In those books I found that people were successful because of their thoughts, beliefs, and actions--not because they were lucky to be born the right race, religion, or socio-economic level. Most people achieve because they believe in themselves and a "higher power". will help them succeed--not the government.

In 1990 I don't remember voting, but Pete Wilson (R) won California anyway.
In 1991 I discovered Tom Leykis, Rush Limbaugh, and Howard Stern on Talkradio.
In 1992 I voted for Ross Perot (I) because George HW Bush broke his "read my lips, no new taxes" promise.

In 1993 my daughter was born. She was delivered via emergency c-section. I had to wait in a little room with a four-foot crucified Jesus. I looked up and asked God if he had to take one of them, take the kid. There was no way I'd be able to raise her by myself.
God let me keep both of them. I registered as a Repulican a few weeks later.

In 1994 I voted for Pete Wilson (R) for Governor of California. I finally picked a winner.
In 1996 I voted for Bob Dole (R) for President.
In 1998 I voted for Dan Lungren (R) for Govenor of California. Where do we find these guys?
In 2000 I voted for George W Bush (R) and finally picked an national winner.

I agreed with him on Iraq, Afghanistan, Kyoto Protocol, and tax cuts. After that, immigration, prescription drug benefits, and spending like a drunken sailor in a whorehouse made me want to start another party. Unfortunately so many other idiots are in those parties, too.

In 2008 I voted for John McCain (R) because I couldn't vote for Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, or Fred Grandy (Iowa Congressman from 1987 to 1995, and played Gopher on The Love Boat).

So now I sit in the loyal opposition watching my country become European, but all is not lost. We still have some free speech for now and I hope to pass onto you my politically incorrect views in the future.
